Welcome to the Sahel Region part of ClimateImpactsOnline! The name Sahel refers to the semi-arid region stretching
longitudinally from Senegal in West Africa to Sudan and Ethiopia in East Africa and latitudinally from just north of
the tropical forests to just south of the Sahara desert (roughly between 10 ° and 20 °N). There is no universally
accepted list of countries belonging to the Sahel, but for the purpose of this data portal we use the UNISS
definition which comprises Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, the Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and
Senegal.
Overall, possible impacts of climate change on the Sahel can be illustrated and analyzed. This integrated webpage
displays information on agricultural production in the Sahel, namely area, total production and yield maps for
different crops across three administrative scales (national and sub-national level). Also included are
some agriculturally relevant climate indices such as consecutive dry days. Data for agricultural parameters has been
aggregated from multiple sources as to provide the widest and best-resolution coverage – nevertheless, only national
data is available for some countries.
